Counter-Strike latency issues
As above, i have issues with the latency of my CS1.6 and CS:S - they are stable one second and then they go high, then lower and so forth. I have no idea why this is - does anyone have any clues as to why this may be happening? I know it's not an issue with Virgin as i rang them up and they ran diagnostics on their side. I am not running bandwith consuming programs in the background either.
Please help!
Nick.

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
Is this on one server, multiple servers or all servers?

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
Well, this actually seems to be occurring on certain servers, some are fine and most UK servers just ping like mad for me. At the moment .de and .nl servers are pinging best for me, very unusual. I cannot play and haven't been able to play since the issues with my PC were resolved.
Infact, it is happening on all servers - not just exclusively UK servers.
Cheers.

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
OK can you do us a traceroute to a few of the servers that are working well for you and those that are not
You do this by going Start->run, typing "cmd" and clicking on "ok", in the Command prompt type
tracert <ip address>
replacing <ip address> with the IP addresses of the servers

"Unable to target system name 81.19.208.13:27020"
The problem is with all server, definately. Although i remember my friend being on a server last night and not receiving any lag what-so-ever. I'd be suprised even if a technician can resolve this issue to be honest.

You need to tracert 81.19.208.13 (minus the :27020)

Note: I forgot to mention, my CPU is under 100% load whilst in-game, however how this plays with my ping in-game i do not know. I use an AMD Athlon 4000+ ~2.4GHZ and1GB DDR SDRAM.

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
Ouch, look at some of those ping spikes. Looks like there's some issues very local to you. Is there anything else running on your home network or on your own pc?
EDIT - ok I see no natted gateway address on your first hop so I guess you're directly plugged into the STB/Modem

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
I plug directly in to the STB. I have relentlessly restarted the STB many times, to no avail. I feel like eating this PC.

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
When you ran those traceroutes did you have the game running minimised in the background?

Re: Counter-Strike latency issues
MSN - Yes. I have uninstalled my firewall in an attempt to curb this problem. I'm in Cheshire, UK.
Uncle Peter, no i did not, it was closed.
I also find it weird that my CPU is under 100% load whilst playing this game, but the issue i wish to sort out is simply the ping - argh. Also, what is UBR?
Also, these pings are not exclusive to Counter-Strike, applications such as mIRC are running at a miserable speed, too. In processes, i see that System Idle Process is on 98 CPU - whatever that is, heh.
