MS Sidewinder Gamepad USB not working - Help

I have Win Me and have downloaded most recent driver V3.0 for MS Sidewinder GamePad.

When plugging in the unit to USB port the PC recognises new hardware wizard as Microsoft USB Sidewinder Game Pad and installs.

However in Device manager under Sound, video, and game controllers there is an error 10 against the device - the file used is msjstick.inf and states that after a search that it is the best driver.

MS has a knowledge base article about not USB working ( 297184) but appears to relate to VIA USB host controller patch - but I have ATI so I do not believe it is applicable.

Any ideas??

The unit is getting power as the led flashes on system power up.

Have uninstalled all (s/w and game pad device)and reinstalled but still no go.

You have ATI what? Motherboard? Unlikely, what model is it? If it is a board with VIA north/south bridges then try downloading / installing the VIA service pack from http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2 then reinstall the gamepad drivers.
