Gaming comms

Here's a useful, fun and cheap accessory for local multiplayer team gaming...

Pop down to your local Maplin Electronics and get these PMR radios (half price now at £20).....
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...rce=1&doy=2m12
(or order online)
Bargain! Tis a good brand too. Good xmas prezzy.

These PMRs are an absolute hoot for barking quick instuctions at each other during a networked game.
"He's camping behind the wall!", "OK, you go left, I'll go right and pop some grenades then you jump in and spray the chaingun".

Range is pretty good and is ideal for LAN games at home and in the office (after work hours of course ) but for internet games with your local friends don't expect sparkling performance in heavily built up areas unless they live little more than a few streets away (and you might need to make sure the lid is on your PC is on to avoid interference).

Also, it might be worth spending the extra 7.99 for the pair of earpiece/mics that are designed to go with it.

Re: Gaming comms

Nice idea, but... don't most games have built-in voice support nowadays? And Direct X 8 has a "bolt-on" thing for games which don't...

Not all games, and not all firewalls/NAT routers let you do audio chat (not easily anyway) . e.g. I've never figured out how to get MSN messenger audio chat going though my router.
Also, unless you have plenty of bandwidth and cpu power then using audio at the same time as gaming will slow things down.
For local games the handheld PMR radios are a good easy fun option and sort of makes things feel more realistic in combat shoot-em-up games It is also very easy to exclude or include by using the Pivacy codes on the PMR radios (38 codes x 8 channels) so you don't have to worry about a local enemy team discovering your tactics . They're a snip at £20 anyway .
