Try changing your proxy server, my connection occasionally got like that when it was on an overcrowded proxy. There's a list of the NTL Proxys
here, and instructions on how to change your proxy just above it. My connection has been fine, apart from when it died the other day (Using cache2-glfd.server.ntli.net)
