At last, some sense.
With the two new rival technologies in dvd formats, at last there is a disc that is on the cards that will play both formats. And it will play the normal dvd format too, so everyone will be happy.

Inventors have come up with a design for a disc that can store copies of films in rival high-definition formats

Re: At last, some sense.
Sounds like a very good idea, espcially if the formats don't change to be stored on the discs at different locations any time soon

Re: At last, some sense.
It wont fly...
You have half of hollywood and half the big electronic firms supporting one format and the other half(s) supporting the other.
They more than likely wont bother with the dual disk technology and press on with the films on the types of disc that best suits them (prey its HD-DVD) as they have a vested interest in the technology that they developed (at an expense).
There is also the substancial digital protection issue from the Hollywood side.

looked at another way, though, this 'hybrid' disk could be a way for the DRM to actually work, for a while - as jumbo159 infers, it may be some time before a suitable burner & blanks can be produced ??

Re: At last, some sense.
Its an interesting idea but as BlueRaja says the big film studios are backing one format or the other.
It amazes me that these big companies are so stupid that they won't co-operate, learning a lesson from what happened with VHS/Betamax. A format war will stunt the growth of the HD market and they will all loose out.
When it comes to mass market I think HD-DVD will be more successful as its more obvious what it is as people are used to the name DVD and have a fair idea what HD is.

Re: At last, some sense.
I will hold off buying until one of the formats 'wins'. The average punter isn't interested in the format wars, all they want is something simple that works.
I was one of the unlucky people who went for Betamax over VHS, all of a sudden you find it diffcult to get the blank media. You're left with a very expensive doorstop.
