Sony Memory Sticks

A couple of questions, if I may.

1) I bought a 512 MB Memory Stick Pro last November from Amazon for £34. I have just checked again and the price seems to have literally halved in 8 months; £17 for a 512 MB or £35 for a 1 GB. I know that prices on these sort of items regularly go down, but this seems a bit extreme (not that I'm complaining!). Am I getting things mixed up somewhere?

2) Am I correct in saying that Pro versions are simply faster versions of the ordinary Memory Sticks and that the two are totally interchangeable? Interestingly, Amazon seems only to list the Pro versions, so I'm guessing that the ordinary versions are becoming obsolete.

Prices have tumbled, a year ago 1GB sticks were about £90, I bought one yesterday for £9.99!

Re: Sony Memory Sticks

Prices for flash memory of all types have fallen drastically, since 8 months ago.

I would guess that the 'pro' sticks being offered are USB2 compatible, wheras previous one were USB1 ??

An USB2 stick should work with a USB1 port, but only at USB1 speed

Re: Sony Memory Sticks

Are these the same Memory Stick Pro that you can use in the Sony Cybershot Digital video camera?

If so that is cheap and I must get some, camera only came with a small memory card.

Nope. The Sony Memory Sticks are sticks that are used in various Sony products for memory, such as cameras and phones.

The difference between the Memory Stick and MS Pro is that the Memory Stick is limited to 128Meg, where as the Pro can currently go to 8 Gig.

Re: Sony Memory Sticks

So, prices really have crashed. I was thinking of getting another 512MB for the camera in time for the holidays. It now looks like I can go for a 1GB for the same money. Smashing!

Re: Sony Memory Sticks

Supply and demand, currently the supply for flash memory is intense due to MP3 players, cameras, mobiles phones etc etc etc.

This means more are produced the more that are produced the cheaper they become so this pushes costs down.

Currently as some has pointed out at somewhere like www.ebuyer.com you can buy a USB drive for £9.99 and get a 1GB!
Alternatively for all you PSP users and Sony Cybershot users one of the cheapest places for Duo sticks is www.play.com

Prices will continue to fall though I expect for another 3 years, the first sub £50 5 GB USB drive is not far off.

Hope this helps

Re: Sony Memory Sticks

In the end it seemed pretty clear that all of the ones on ebay were fake (and presumably only 1/4 the actual capacity with some memory compression software to fool you into thinking you got what you paid for)

I went for play.com instead and got 2Gb Sandisk Duo Pro for £60, which really is nothing
