Mobile phone tariffs expensive?

Is it just me or are pay as you go mobile tariffs still expensive?

I've just been looking around for a new phone to continue using on Easymobile (my K700i has about given up the ghost) but I thought I'd take a look at the tariffs from the main providers.

Boy was I in for a shock, 40p per min this, 30p per min that, 10p for a text. I was hoping that the short time I'd been away from Orange they or one of the other providers would have brought their prices down. Doesn't look like it, unless I'm missing something glaringly obvious.

I'm a low (well I think so) user, my account gets auto-credited with £10 about once a month and I use that on texts and calls (if anyones a tarrif guru and thinks they can help I can provide my statements ). Looking around even with bolt-ons (O2), stop the clock(Voda), bonus top-ups(orange) and mates rates (Tmobile) not one of the main providers can come close to Easymobiles flat 15ppm calls and 5p texts.

Am I on the cheapest tariff for me or could I be saving money somewhere? Well after an hours extensive research I still can't tell you.

Anyone would have thought they do it on purpose.

Grrrr, that's an hour of my life I'll never get back!

Re: Mobile phone tariffs expensive?

I've just been given an old Nokia phone & a Tesco sim card that charges 15p/min on calls & 5p/min for texts, the sim was £3.47.

- it will only call or text, though & is UK only.

Does this mean you actually have a mobile phone of sorts now Gaz????
Tesco mobile doesn't seem too bad for basic usage.

Re: Mobile phone tariffs expensive?

virgin mobile is 15 p for the first 5 minutes of the day then 5p per minute thereafter to other mobiles and uk landlines or just 3p per minute to other vigin customers

http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/s...ff/tariff.html

or you can buy a pay as you go bundle

http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/bundles/index.jsp

Looks like the same sort of tariff as Easymobile - still, it shows it can be done.

Edit - Although Tesco charge 20ppm for x netwrok calls, so again that's another one out of the window.

Re: Mobile phone tariffs expensive?

I use "Fresh" from the carphone warehouse. Great rates too, and a sort of direct debit payg, so no need for a scratch card top up.

30ppm - other network
15ppm - land line
10ppm - text

Again more expensive than Easy

Trouble is what I save on calls (10ppm saving for every min over 5min) I'll loose again on the increased cost of texts (Don't know anyone on Virgin).

After a bit more poking around I've come to the conclusion that Easymobile have the cheapest tariff out there. Bummer, thought I'd be able to make a saving somewhere.
