Unhappy tv problem

this is one for any tv engineers out there , my widesreen tv has gone weird , the picture is there as normal but it appears as though one of the colours is missing giving the screen a funny colour , none of the controls have been altered , it did this once before but leaving it off over night cured it , now this isnt working , is it time for a new one or is it worth getting repaired ????????????

I'm no tv techie, but it sounds very much like one of your color triggers has packed up, if it has, depending on the age of the set, it may be worth repairing.

See if you can find a local repair shop that will give you a free quote rather than getting an engineer to charge you £30+ to tell you it's knackered.

Good luck.

What make is it?
How old is it?
When did you buy it?
Where did you buy it?

Re: tv problem

omg, you should warn the guests at your party not to put drinks on top of the tele because they may get knocked over and damage the tele.

Re: tv problem

anyway , i have had a tv engineer around this afternoon and he reckons after poking around in the back it is indeed the tube , now heres the weird thing he offered to clean it for me at a cost of £35 , so i am thinking to myself clean it , seems weird so i said leave it for now and i will see what the wife wants to do , so he says fair enough puts it back together and leaves , now here is the really weird bit , before he came the tv was working ok the picture was fine but the control to alter the amount of colour wasnt working , i.e. you couldnt make it show black and white , after he went the amopunt of colour can be altered and the picture itself looks a damned sight better than it did , so that leaves me wondering if all that wanted doing was a few contacts cleaning here and there ???????????? , anyway i am waiting for someone to come here and tell me i am wrong and no doubt when i turn the tv on in the morning it wont be working properly again

Do you still get dry solder joints anymore? - Could be that a break in the solder has now been put back in place making a better connection?

Re: tv problem

did he take the board off the back of the tube. These contacts can be bad at times. Age old trick of a TV eng was to take the board off the back of the tube, discharge the tube, connect a box of tricks up to the tube which heats the guns up and burnt the skin of the phosphur and then put it back together. Often looked like a new TV.

Re: tv problem

If it plays up again and your not looking for an excuse to change the TV it is worth getting the tube cleaned. However it is a bit of a hit and miss affair, no guarantees but i've seen TV's go on for another 5yrs+ after the guns in the tube being cleaned

Re: tv problem

best idea is to weigh up the pro's and the con's and work out if the cheaper option is to clean it or cut your losses and go for a new one but four years ain't that old! years ago the tube pins could be bent to make a better connection it may be what this bloke has done making things better now and the offer of a clean up as a precaution.
