DVD - Green tint on new TV

Hi All,

I recently brought a new LCD TV. The problem is when I play a DVD it has a green sort of tint on the picture (seems that where is supposed to be black is green). I first though this was a problem with the cable, so I changed the cable, didn't make a difference. So then I thought there must be a problem with the SCART port on the back of the TV, so I connected it into another port but the same problem.

Now as the Sky picture is perfect no matter which cable or port I use with it I thought it must be a problem with the DVD player, so I brought a CRT portable TV down from upstairs and plugged the DVD player into this and the picture is perfect.

So I played about with the settings on the TV, changing the inputs from composite to RGB etc but nothing I tried would get rid of the green tint.

The only thing I can think of is that the DVD player is around 5 years old (or more) and the TV is too advanced for it?

Anyone any ideas?

Wasnt the Matrix was it

have you got another device you can plug into the same input on the TV. On Some tv's, different scart inputs gets processed differently

Re: DVD - Green tint on new TV

Green does seem to be the problem colour, the early PS2s would add a green tint to DVDs. What screen setup options are there on the DVD, the TV?

I tried that, I plugged the Sky into it and it worked fine.

That was because an RGB scart lead was being used. If you used a composite scart it was fine. (Something to go with copy portection i think)

Are you using a fully connected scart lead Gaz?

can you try the sky scart lead on the DVD

Don't know if there any any on the DVD, where would I find them.

On the TV I could change the Input from S-Video to Composite to RGB. S-Video gives like a fuzzy black and white image while composite and RGB both show the image with a green tint.

Re: DVD - Green tint on new TV

What make of DVD player are you using?

My son has this exact same problem, when he plays DVD's on his playstation 2 system, I needed to buy a cable from game that switched off RGB to composit out, and the green screen went away right away.

The other thing I can think of is perhaps the DVD player you're using has an imbalaced macravision copy protection system (designed to stop people copying DVD's to other DVD recorders/video players) and perhaps your main tv is too sensitive in this respect when it gets the signal from the DVD scart.

Can you ask a friend/next door neighbour to see if they have a DVD player you can test on the main tv, to eliminate any problems first in that area, then post back here with results?

Re: DVD - Green tint on new TV

hmm dont know what to suggest

Youve tried another device on the same TV input

Youve tried a different scart lead

Your tried the DVD on a differnet TV

That would seem to eliminate everything

ahhhh is the SKY and DVD both in RGB mode? If one is and one isnt then that would use different connections in the lead and tv

Re: DVD - Green tint on new TV

gazzae, on the DVD player, there should be a menu button which will let you set up the DVD player for RGB out, plus other picture settings, check the instruction book if you have it, or post the make/number and I'll try and get it for you and post it here

Its an LG DVD player. Don't have the model number but I will check it out tonight.
Don't have the manual either. I will have a look at the menu settings on the DVD tonight when I get home.

Thanks Handyman.

I'll get the model number tonight and see if the manual gives any hints and then report back.

pinatubo is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: DVD - Green tint on new TV

If I remember correctly ,and I'm going back a few years here, the green cast on Playstations was caused by the RGB synch signals being on the Green line as opposed to the normal method of using synch signals on the Composite line.
Synch on green is used for computer monitors whereas synch on composite is used for CRT TVs.I don't know what the preferred method is for LCD/plasma TVs.

Re: DVD - Green tint on new TV

Do you have a switch box that the leads go through.

My sister has a switch box and the screen flash green/red/blue while watching TV, due to the cheap switch box they've got.

He's thinking of building his own.
