NiMh with very low self-discharge

Up until now, the main advantage of rechargable Li-Ion batteries compared with NiMhs has been their low self-discharge. This means that you can leave your Li-Ion powered phone switched off for a fortnight and it will still work when you pick it up again.

Until now, that is:

Dubbed 'eneloop', the key is dramatically reduced self-discharge: "Residual ratio after one year of non-use is 85 per cent in temperature conditions of 20 deg C" said the firm. AA capacity is 2.5Ah (2.3 Ah min.) with 1,000 cycle life.

Strange name but that should help the fight against all those proprietary Li-Ion batteries

I always thought the main bennefit of Li-Ion over NiMhs was the reduced memory effect when the battery is charged up without being discharged first?

NiMhs have no memory effect - that's NiCds.
