Fishy?
Now this seems a bit off..

Five men detained after a 7,000km (4,350 mile), 21-day chase across three oceans have been found not guilty of poaching rare fish in Australia.
Australia's fisheries minister has said he is amazed at the verdict, which follows the most expensive maritime chase in the country's history.
The verdict ends the second trial of the men after an earlier jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
The men were caught in 2003 with 97 metric tonnes of Patagonian toothfish.
But the second jury found them not guilty, apparently on the grounds that their vessel, the Viarsa, did not have fishing gear in the water when it was finally caught.

They have the fish in their boat but because they had no fishing gear they are innocent? How the heck did they get the fish then?
Did it not occur to anyone that they deliberately disposed of the gear?

Its to do with the burden of proof concept. One of the most important aspects of law in all decent countries.
Basically, it isn't up for the fishermen to prove their innocence, its for the state to prove their guilt. Because they couldn't prove they actually caught the fish (they could have bought it off someone else or something), they couldn't be found guilty of it.

Must have been very busy with the fish market going on out at sea.
Usually when talking about protected species simply handling is an offence - hence no need to prove you caught it
