Technology to "look inside" concrete structures could not only monitor them for corrosion, but also locate the remains of murder victims, experts say.

So where do we start?Whom do we believe to be currently holding up our local flyover?

No, he's probably under a US flyover somewhere. Not much point in transporting a body across the Atlantic when you can just as easily (probably a lot more easily) dispose of it domestically... ;-)

According to a conversation years ago with a friend who's a Civil Engineer, such stories are mostly, if not completely, mythical as any concrete structure with such a large void in would suffer serious damage or even collapse within a very short time.

Re: Scanner to 'see inside' concrete
This is what Mrs A does for a living!
Well, actually, she test concrete foundation piles that are cast in situ with machines such as this one.
After the concrete has set (normally at least 5 day) she goes along and hits the top with a hammer. This makes the pile 'ring'. A geophone, also on the pile head, picks up the vibration and a box of tricks works out the pile profile - sort of. This is exactly the same technique used by the old wheel tappers - except they used their ears to listen for the ring. This testing is to make sure that the pile was cast properly and there are no voids where the soil has dropped in while it was being cast. Generally, these things are so overdesigned, and the cost of rework so expensive, that the odd duff pile is tollerated.
