) Well actually I use 1899 because most of my calls are on "standard" phone numbers (or mobiles which are still cheaper), but, last time I checked 18866 charges 0.5p per minute with an NTL originating line, as opposed to free for 1899, so even though it costs a penny more in connection charge, it's cheaper in the long run.

Well on two of my phones the prefix is set up on a speed dial button anyway, so I just hit that, wait until it says "welcome" then key in the usual number, but even on the phone that doesn't have the speed dial ability, it's now really become automatic to hit 0808 170 7474.
It takes a couple of extra seconds to do so and to connect, but hearing "This is a free phone call!" makes it all worthwhile

AIUI they "bulk buy" phone line access, so I believe a proportion of the connection charge goes to them and if you phone a mobile or 0845 or 0870, they'll get some of the charge from that too, as, also, for international calls.
There again, it may be that the "free calls" in the UK is effectively a loss leader to get people to use their other call services.
