Android Apps won't download

Hi I've been trying to download some new ringtones apps on my LG GT540 Optimus and for some reason they've all failed with a 'download unsuccessful please try again' notification appearing. I've tried several different apps and tried updating an existing app of mine but they all fail. I'm trying to do this via wi-fi and seem to be connected OK so what could be causing this problem? I'm on Android 2.1 IIRC and have noticed that the Android Market app is still appearing in that form whereas on my tablet it's become Android Play. Could that be the problem?

Cheers as always.

TVM for that link!

Have done some of the things listed and will try some of the other simple suggestions later when I have time. Not keen on fiddling too much as I don't know what I'm doing lol.
