Cardless ATM withdrawals with RBS Group (incl. NatWest) & a smartphone

We've already seen new ways of mobile banking recently, such as Barclays Pingit, which lets you use a smartphone app to transfer money to other people. NatWest has also updated its smartphone app to allow transfers to other accounts already set up as payees via online banking, and to other people via their mobile number ("Pay Your Contacts", which I guess is NatWest's equivalent of Pingit).

Now, NatWest is introducing "Get Cash": You use the smartphone app to select a withdrawal amount from £10 to (initially) £100. The app provides you with a code, and you then simply enter this code into an RBS, NatWest, or Tesco ATM. No card necessary. Very handy if you have forgotten your card, or if you simply don't want to take your wallet with you when you go out.

Pay your contacts only works if they've got the NatWest app - so only works between NatWest customers, compared with Pingit that anyone can use

However the advantage of the Natwest system is doesn't involve all the messing around that Pingit does e.g preloading of cash etc

I'll definately be using the cardless cash thing when it comes along - and I notice it's on Android first

Now when they finally get their fingers out their ass and adopt a standardized NFC payments ... standard ... we'll all be sorted.

This will be great, if you lose your card you will have a back up until your new card arrives!.

Well, it would be - no pesky Apple approval process!

The iPhone app was updated yesterday. I've not tried out the feature yet, though.

Just meant that Android was last to get the app (even after Blackberry), so thought it was amusing it's now getting features first

Re: Cardless ATM withdrawals with RBS Group (incl. NatWest) & a smartphone

Thread title clarified ... this innovation is by the RBS group, of which NatWest is a subsidiary. It also applies to customers at RBS (Presumably Coutts as well, so the Queen will be delighted).

---------- Post added at 11:00 ---------- Previous post was at 10:49 ----------

Not that most of you would notice, but for every NatWest advert there's an RBS version ... Voice over by Ken Stott instead of Paul McGann and actors re-dubbed as required. We get the RBS version on ITV1 and Channel 4 because they can regionalise their adverts, and the NatWest version everywhere else.
