Smaller but better?
Hi guys,
I have an HTC Incredible S and I hate the back of it. Shrink wrap doesn't do it for me. I love Android phones but all the new ones are huge, and still getting bigger! All I want is a phone that I can comfortably fit in my pocket and not have to worry about snapping the thing in half. I drool over my colleague's Galaxy 2 but it's practically a tablet. Can anyone recommend a decent Android phone with a screen no bigger than 4" but with really good resolution?

Re: Smaller but better?
It is not just the screen that makes the difference in the size, the form factor does too. I have an HTC Sensation and even though that has a 4.3in screen the phone itself looks and feels smaller than the Samsung S2, using the site Ramrod posted should help with the over all sizes.

Not all them. There are plenty of smaller ones, but yes often the "flagship" devices are bigger. If you think the GS2 is "practically a tablet", try the S3 or the HTC One X - or hell the Galaxy Note...
... Back on topic. My recommendation would go to the HTC One S. Yes, it's 4.3" but it feels a lot smaller, lighter, and more solid than the GS2, despite having the same sized screen. It's got similar specs too.
But on the other hand there's the question of do you really need a "Superphone", i.e. top end dual/quad core handsets? If not, there's plenty under 4". I don't see the point, as 4.3" is perfectly sized and useable even for my tiny hands, but there's things like the Galaxy Ace 2 (3.8") Galaxy S Advance (basically a smaller S2, 4.0") HTC One V (3.7") Sony XPeria U (3.5"), etc.

LOL
Getting back to your choice if its the One S which has a 4.3" screen so IMO if a 4.3" is about as big as you want to go then a Galaxy SII would be the better phone & can be got at good prices now the SIII is out.
One X has a 4.7" screen & the One V a 3.7" screen & they'll all break if you sit on them
The V is a reasonably specced phone but not much better if at all when compared to the SGS.
& then its down to PAYG or PM & what you want to spend.

Re: Smaller but better?
The Galaxy S II has an inferior processor, lower screen resolution (but higher subpixel resolution), inferior wireless performance, inferior mobile reception, and a pretty rubbish earpiece too. Generally, all round pretty crap and worse in every way as a phone

Re: Smaller but better?
Disagree ^^ had the S2 for a year and it was a fantastic phone.
Also the phones may be a little bigger but they are generally thinner and lighter than a lot of the 'smaller' handsets out there.

Re: Smaller but better?
I guess you haven't had the luxury of dealing with http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=12649 on a daily basis then.
With all respect it's a decent multimedia or computing device, but as an actual phone the HTC beats it in all respects that matter - reception and call quality on 2G, 3G, and Wifi. The S2 in fact ranked objectively the worst in terms of 2G 3G and Wifi reception out of every phone I've ever had with those features, and subjectively the earpiece was also the worst I've used in a while. But that's just me.

Re: Smaller but better?
moto defy+ ticks all the boxes if you can handle 'only a 3.7 inch screen, it certainly won't snap though, and is a reasonable performer with a large battery.
good with wi-fi recept, reception/call quality, speaker and earpiece good too (certainly better than a galaxy s II which has a crappy speaker & earpiece)

Re: Smaller but better?
Hmmm.... Moto Defy you say? Interesting.
Putting my wants/desires/needs plainly, I want a ruddy good display quality but without the humongous...how do you spell that? Anywho, quality of display over size. Is there such a thing? Can I get the display quality of, for example, the Galaxy 2 in the size of, say, the Iphone? See, it's the visuals that push all my buttons. A visuals whore, thats moi.....gotta run, need a pee and the cats are after the spiders again....

Re: Smaller but better?
I was reading an article today about that, saying some particular handset had an incredible screen to be let down only by its (lack of) size. I think it'd suit you.
Mate.

Re: Smaller but better?
Well the defy+ (not the older defy) doesn't have an OLED screen like the galaxy, it does have a hi res LCD one though (854 x 480 pixels)
OLED screens aren't that great anyway, as they only function super efficiently if you use only dark colours, once you inject a bit of colour or white, the super efficient turns to super inefficient..
Here are the original phone specs (incredible S)
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_incredible_s-3788.php
and the moto defy+ specs here so you can directly compare
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_defy+-4098.php
It doesn't have much wasted space around the edges so you get a relatively large screen without having this huge thing in your hands
It DOESN'T have a back cover made out of uhmm paper though unlike the galaxy, nor will it snap in half if you breathe heavily on it.
In fact the only real drawback I've found is that it doesn't have a front camera for video chat.
and Galaxy S II here
