Re: Best 50" TV
We have an LG 50" 1080p plasma and it has a lovely picture, would recommend, was 650 over a year ago.

On a serious note, wouldn't an LED now be the way to go?

Sales? Who needs sales! It's a consumers marketplace these days - loads of comparison sites for you to check prices against.

Re: Best 50" TV
I would also recommend you go to a local hi fi shop. For example, Richer Sounds, John Lewis or a proper HiFi or Home cinema dealer. Avoid the likes of Dixons, Comet or other department stores as in my experience, they don't set up the display models propely, so you don't get an accurate view of how the TV is.
In the case of Dixons, where they do set up the Demo TVs properly, they tend to use them to try and sell you £80 Monster HDMI cables.Cables which, for lengths of less than 10 metres (which most HDMI cables are) are no better than the £2 ones sold on ebay.
However, I digress..
I have a 42 inch Samsung LED which gives an excellent picture. A friend has a Samsung 50 inch LED that also gives an excellent picture. I also have a 32 inch Panasonic LCD that gives a good picture (although it looks slightly washed out compared to the Sammy, but I think that's actually due to the use of LCD rather than LED). Panasonic do have a good reputation.
The only area where LEDs lose out is that there often isn't enough space in the TV casing for decent speakers. My Sammy 42inch has OK sound, but lacks Bass.
The reason I bought the Sammy? I was in a John Lewis, saw it on the display stand. Looked round the back, saw it was hooked up with good (but not expensive) cabling, and that the only AV connection hooked up was HDMI. It was playing back Cricket on Sky Sports HD and, while I don't like cricket, I saw the picture and my jaw dropped.

I was being deadly serious!
It depends entirely on a personal level. Some people don't like the brightness of the LEDs, but the tones are a lot more comparable to Plasma/CRT now.

You might be able to get a secondhand Pioneer Kuro plasma such as PDL-LX5090 for that sort of cash - awesone performance
