Re: I want one!

When I was a lad you could carry a pen knife around but what you really wanted was to have a sheath knife. It's not so much having a weapon but having proven that you had progressed beyond a more novelty thing to a real tool.

I still can't see what's wrong with carrying a knife if you just have it as a tool. Say out in the woods/park to cut up twigs etc for a fire, do some carving and the like. Then you walk home still with knife. Maybe it's growing up in South Africa with more open space (late 70's) and more wandering around. No-one I knew would ever even think of using a knife as a weapon. It was a tool and one you earned the right to have that could be taken away if you displayed lack of care for that tool or inappropriate use.

The problem is that you can't legislate along the lines of you can have a knife if you are a good guy (or gal) but not if you are a bad egg.

Seems doubetful, as it would be wrapped, and you would clearly be taking it home. This seems to be one of those areas where the police would use their judgement as to whether you have a valid reason for carrying a knife. Roaming the street at 2AM vs. wrapped in a bag on the high street or as part of a load of other cooking utensils in the boot of your car on your way to a dinner party. I regaularly carry a Swiss Army knife as part of my toolkit when out cycling. It's not something I worry about.

If you had the reciept and still packaged then there's a bona-fide reason for transporting it. I carry a multi-tool with a 2.5" knife in the car and on the bike, it's saved me a few times and was found/OK'd by armed police one time doing a security check a few few years back on the Gatwick perimeter road. Now if I'd had it inside the airport then it would have been a different matter.

It's all common sense in the end..

Not too sure about in the airport. I've carried my Swiss Army knife in my checked luggage several times. It hasn't been a problem so far, (though I'd imagine checking it in as part of a toolkit accompanied by two boxed bicycles helps). But yeah, it's just common sense.

Reasonable excuse is the main thing. Plenty of people carry leathermans about to and from work with no issue and they have locking blades.

Hang about a street corner with a cheap lock back or kitchen knife and you'd be hard pressed to explain that away.
