Will Sony DVD Player read AVI files on External Hard Drive?

Hi Guys, I am thinking about buying a Sony DAV-DZ740 HCS (yes money is tight!) but I can't tell from the on-line listed spec's if it will read AVI files, which is the format all of my movies, series etc are stored on my EHD. The specs say that it will support Xvid & MPEG4. Can anyone advise please?

AVI is just the file container (which then has audio and video information within it encoded to a particular spec), try GSPOT to tell which codec is used within the AVI container..

Hi Kymmy, many thanks for your reply, they all seem to be XviD which is perfect. One other question is; the spec's state that it has USB Flash Drive Playback, would that mean it would read flash drives with a limited capacity (8GB) or could it something like .5TB?

It'll normally specify an upper limit, if not then you'll have to contact Sony for an answer.. Also the upper limit may change due to which firmware is on the device, try seeing if there is an updated firmware first as the changelog file sometimes supplied with the firmware may specify the limit especially if it changes the limit

May save you a bit of money if you have a laptop and just connect it to your TV via HDMI or VGA & Audio to Audio cable.

Used a different device to the one your looking at but it was when they were first arrived on the scene, as you can guess there were multiple problems and I ended up just using my laptop.

Re: Will Sony DVD Player read AVI files on External Hard Drive?

I have one of those cheapo Foehn & Hirsh BD players. I've successfully used a 16gig flash drive and am currently using a 500gig external drive.

All players may be different and the only way is usually suck it and see. However generally USB self powered HDD's are problematic.

For most players you will have to make sure your drives are formatted to FAT16/32

Well, the system arrived today. No euro adapter in the box contrary to what the reseller stated. Had one here anyway, plugged her in. No Power going to receiver. Seething. Thanks for your advice anyway lads.
