iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
A thread to bring discussion of this weeks releases together all in one place and hopefully avoid repetition across the iPad, iPhone and existing iOS threads.
Anyone tried out the split keyboard yet? Could be quite handy if you like holding with both hands and and thumb-typing ... Now you can do it even on the iPad screen.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
I liked the idea of the split keyboard on the ipad but after being on the beta I found it too weird.
Wish Siri was available on iPad though.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
I managed to port my MobileMe account to iCloud this morning, although I had to try a few times to get past the 'please try later' screen.
When I moved my main account, my extra email-only account didn't go with it. I had to do that separately. Now it appears as if both accounts are fully-featured.

Just discovered that if you swipe your finger downwards from the top of the screen, it brings down a quick list of the day's diary entries. Very nice.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
I love the new notification system. Finally notifications on iOS don't suck!
iCloud... All I'm really using is the Document and Backup side so far. None of the names I'd want were available as a me.com email, so I'm sticking with Google for email. And as I'm sticking with Google for email, I have to stick with Google for Contacts and may as well also stick with Google for Calendars. I'll give the Photostream a try though, once I sort out my photo folders on the PC.
Wireless sync and backup is great. One problem I had at first was that iTunes would automatically run every time I unlocked my iPhone/iPad, but unchecking "Open iTunes when this <iDevice> is connected" sorted that problem out.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
Well, me.com and mac.com before it have been around rather a long time. A lot of the desirable email addresses went a long time ago. I got mine within months of it launching and couldn't get my firstname.lastname even back then.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
Yeah, I suppose it was never going to be likely that I'd be able to have matt.dodd (and other variations). I even tried my XBL Tag too though and that was gone
Ah well. Google works very well as it is. I just thought it would be nice to have One Email To Rule Them All.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
How are you getting along syncing google calendars into iOS? I've managed it but the way it works just isn't as smooth and functional for my liking (simple things like not being able to get multiple calendars in a google account to come through properly on the iPad).

I've never had a problem with it, although I only have the one calendar on the iPad.

Ah... On the iPhone, you can now use the volume up button to take pictures with the camera. Far more useful than before. You can also open the camera on the lock screen by double-tapping the Home button to reveal a camera button, instead of having to unlock the phone first.

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
Photostream is very handy.
e.g. Take a pic on my iPhone... it's right there on my iPad, and on my PC You can also do it the other way around, and dump a photo in the Photostream folder on the PC and it will appear on the iDevices.
Also extremely useful having the "documents in the cloud" feature for iWork. Now all it needs is for the Windows iCloud control panel thing to sync those as well as photos...

Re: iOS 5 and iCloud: in the wild
I'm using Pages on my mac and on the iPad. Unfortunately at the moment the iWork that Pages for Mac shares to is not the same thing as the iWork feature within iCloud. I expect full iCloud integration for the iWork suite is going to come in a new full version I'm going to have to pay for.
Still, it's great as far as it goes. I got some work done in the local library earlier this week, then when I got home the document was sitting in the iWork section of iCloud just waiting for me to drag to my desktop. I was also able to drag the updated document back into the browser and the new version was almost instantly on the iPad. If they can properly integrate the download to / upload from Mac part of the equation, I'll be very happy indeed.
