Question best way to get media housewide?

Most things media-wise reside on my PC (which is connected to the superrrrhub)

Whats the best route to take (without spending stupid money) to have my mp3's played in different rooms, to have my videos playing on a TV etc

What components / leads would I need to achieve this, bearing in mind my bedroom tv is on a different floor to my pc and router.

Guessing for Ethernet I would use powerlines networking, but what box would I need to attach to my TV as mine doesn't have an ethernet port (Do any?)

Presumably there's wi-fi enabled speakers? that could play mp3's playing from my PC ? so places like the bathroom could get sound.

I hear the phrase 'smart tv' and 'DNLA' bandied about a lot, but no idea what they mean exactly.

Maybe some of the AV guru's can make some sense out of what I'm looking for and can ofer up some suggestions.

Re: best way to get media housewide?

Currently I have all my music, videos etc stored on a nas drive (basically a hard disk that sits on the network) benefit of this is my pc does not have to be switched on for this to work.

I then have a few devices running xbmc Xbmc.org , one being an apple tv

These connects to the nas drive to play music and videos

There are wifi speakers or systems such sonos but they aren't particular cheep an they only do music.

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital...twork_Alliance

My Blu-Ray supports this and I can stream media from my HTC to my TV via the Bl-Ray.

Apple TV's probably. All your video has to be in mp4 but apart from that its £90 a box and just plug and play on any TV with HDMI.

Depends what format your media is in.. If it's in one of the formats defined in the Standard, and using one of the codecs, you should be fine.

If (as a lot of video is) it is in MKV format, or using a non-mp4 based codec (I am counting WMV as an mp4 based codec here), you may be out of luck.

Re: best way to get media housewide?

This may be the thing if I get some decent hi-speed homeplugs for ethernet connectivity.

The popcorn hour is a nice piece of kit, nearly bought one but I went for xbmc as it was a bit more flexible

I use a couple of WDTV Live units and a NAS box. I have evything hardwired but Homeplugs are certainly an option
