Re: Faster than the speed of light?
And how is this going to make a difference to my life? Will I ever be able to go back and give myself a kick up the arse when I'm drinking in the student bar and get me to rethink my chosen career?

everything's not you!
it's about advancing human kind's understanding of physics. it will inevitably lead to massive things, some of which may be beyond our current thinking of what is possible at this time. true, you or I may not see the results of such knowledge in our lifetimes, but it truly is a massive breakthrough.

Re: Faster than the speed of light?
Don't want to get ahead of myself, but there are reports they're testing a loose cable that they believe caused the mismeasurement.

I'm entirely serious: http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencein...es-faster.html
But they've not announced it officially yet.

Seriously, you'd have thought that systems would be in place that would expose any such faults if measurement error can threaten to undermine some of the core concepts of physics.

Re: Faster than the speed of light?
I'd have thought it would cause the delay to appear longer, not quicker! but then, there's a reason I don't work at CERN!

Re: Faster than the speed of light?
Ok, now an official statement says they are investigating two possible faults, one which would have led to an underestimation and one which would have led to an other estimation.
The good news is they can use the old "blame the engineer" excuse.

If it's loose on the timing side of the measurement then the clock will appear slow compared to what they're timing..
It's as though you breaking the sound barrier in your car and for you to realise that the speedo is over-reading by 1000000% It doesn't make the car any slower or faster than a standard car

Re: Faster than the speed of light?
Now shown to be 'only' going at the speed of light:
Quote:
An experiment to repeat a test of the speed of subatomic particles known as neutrinos has found that they do not travel faster than light.
Results announced in September suggested that neutrinos can exceed light speed, but were met with scepticism as that would upend Einstein's theory of relativity.
A test run by a different group at the same laboratory has now clocked them travelling at precisely light speed.

And they went through all that trouble with making a Horizon episode too. Idiots.

That's assuming no measurement error of course
