Mobile phones could soon be 'powered by walking'

Taking a stroll may soon be enough to re-charge your mobile phone, after US researchers developed a way to generate electricity from human motion.
Placed in a shoe, the device captures the energy of moving micro droplets and converts it into electrical current.
|
Quote:
"Humans, generally speaking, are very powerful energy-producing machines," said Professor Tom Krupenkin from the university's mechanical engineering department.
"While sprinting, a person can produce as much as a kilowatt of power."
That, according to the scientists, is more than enough to power a standard mobile phone.

I wonder if other products might be powered by motion power?

I'm a bad, bad man. I read the thread title without my glasses on and would have sworn it said something else. Bad Russ. Naughty Russ.

Motion would have to something like walking, running, hand going up and down kind of thing.
I think it'll just be tied to things like mobiles and such really.

That's a high peak considering a good bike generator can only muster 300w and a hand cranked one about 35 watts.
I wonder how many more hair-brained ideas they'll come up with. Solar charger is much more practical and works while I take a nap.

We had some Dutch cyclists stay with us recently. I was amazed to see one of them had a little solar panel on the back of the bike which apparently charged batteries for both his phone and GPS unit. Clever stuff.

Sounds useful. Strap the charger to the cat and change the batteries at mealtimes. About time they paid their way.
