Well, it's happened!
"What's happened?!" you might well ask. Answer: the future of television as predicted by the US TV series of "Max Headroom". There's an episode - I can't remember which one - in which Edison Carter, a female colleague and a cop are checking out a woman's apartment as part of an investigation. They discover her TV has an Off switch. "She'll get 20 years for that," the cop says, "Off switches are illegal."
Now to the point: my sister recently bought a new TV, by LG (I forget the model number). She wanted to know how to switch it off altogether, i.e. not just put it in standby mode, but turn it off.
I quickly discovered that, short of using a mains socket with a switch and switching the socket off, there is NO way to turn the TV off altogether.
I'm not sure I like the implications of this...

Re: Well, it's happened!
Our 37" LCD from LG doesn't have an off switch, but you can get the red Standby Light to not be on when it's in standby.
However our newer LG 47" LCD downstairs DOES have a little rocker switch on the rear of it just under and behind where the blue "on" LED is.

Re: Well, it's happened!
Supposedly in this age of going green I'd have thought manufacturers would be phasing out the standby function in favour of a fully off switch.

Re: Well, it's happened!
AFAIK what they've been comcentrating on is developing ultra-low-power standby.

Wasn't there a standby thingy on Dragon's Den?
http://www.standby-saver.co.uk/
I thought they were going to try and get that put into TV's at the point of making.

Re: Well, it's happened!
Didn't George Orwell predicted this in his book 1984?
If I remember correctly there wasn't even a standby button.

Re: Well, it's happened!
I unplug my tv...just in case it turns itself on and watches programmes while i am sleeping.
Sky box stays on, recording something (always something to record).

Re: Well, it's happened!
Around the back...hmm. There's no mention of it in the manual, and it didn't occur to me to look on the back...possible. I'll check when I visit on Sunday, but I don't expect to find one.
One line from Max Headroom always stuck in my mind: in the episode where someone includes subliminal code to get viewers addicted to an utterly crappy game show, there are survivors of a collapsed building risking life and limb - for their TV sets. Murray, Network 23's producer, says, "Why bother rescuing TV sets? They're given to the needy..."
The tagline for the original movie (UK-made and a classic of the genre, and I wish they'd get around to releasing it on DVD) was "20 minutes into the future". Not quite, but not that far off either.
