'Singing penis' sets noise record
Now that's what I call a party trick!

Scientists have a habit of borrowing ideas from other disciplines. This insect makes a very loud noise, and the mechanism is unknown. Who knows, ideas from this research might be used for a new type of ultrasound scanner to detect cancers.
If you want examples of excellent wastes of money, have a look at some of the money spent on advertising:

Ok, I get your point. I didn`t think of it like that.

Re: 'Singing penis' sets noise record
One obvious example is CERN and the LHC. Seems a lot to spend smacking particles together but where do you think the technology for radiotherapy, and the particle accelerators that make the isotopes used for it come from?
The cooling technology used to keep the LHC's superconductors superconducting likewise is being used in a fusion reactor, fusion is the power source of the future.
Not to say there aren't some completely nonsensical 'scientific' breakthroughs.

Some more examples:
Alexander Fleming noticed that a culture dish of bacteria that had accidentally been invaded by a mould had stopped a bacterial colony from growing. This led to the discovery of penicillin.
Wilhelm Roentgen noticed that a screen would fluoresce when an electrical discharge occurred in the tube he was working on. He reached out for the screen, and saw a shadow of the bones of his hand on the screen. He had discovered X-rays.
Louis Pasteur inoculated some chickens with cholera bacteria which was supposed to kill them. However, he accidentally used an old culture of the bacteria, and the chickens became sick but then recovered. Pasteur inoculated them again with bacteria from a fresh culture and the chickens didn't even get sick. He had discovered vaccination.

Ah, the Principle of Limited Sloppiness.
My favourite example of that is ' Burnt wine' or 'brandewijn', more commonly known as Brandy...
