Canon T1i Digi Zoom

I currently have a Rebel T1i, and I'm trying to make use of the digital zoom function. Apparently the Cannon will allow you to zoom in 5x or 10x. I know that with DSLR's you are supposed to use the telephoto lens and that Digital Zoom loses quality.

I'm using a standard lens at the moment 18-55 EFS, I have selected "P" Mode to allow me to access live view mode.

I have then selected the magnifying glass button on the top right which allows me to zoom in, but the moment i press the capture button, it takes a normal shot, not a zoomed shot.

As far as I know you "CAN" take zoomed images, but I seem to be doing it wrong, and wondered if anyone could help?

Are you sure that the zoom function in live view isn't just there to enable you to view and focus on the subject better rather than take actual zoomed shots?

Is there any zoom function available in playback mode which creates a second digitally zoomed image from the original?

it seems to only allow me to focus the shot. ive since discovered that taking pictures in raw format allows me to crop the image the way i want it with no loss of quality.

ive been so used to bridge cameras that i assumed this was the same type of thing, obviously its not.
