Enigma genius Alan Turing papers saved for the nation
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12575029
Quote:
A last minute donation from the National Heritage Memorial Fund has saved the papers of the computing genius Alan Turing for the nation.
The collection of scientific papers and material relating to Turing's work on wartime codebreaking was in danger of going abroad.
|
Quote:
|
The aim was to save the papers for the museum at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, where Turing worked breaking codes during the war.
|
Very pleased at this news.

Re: Enigma genius Alan Turing papers saved for the nation
It would have been a very sad day indeed if they had gone abroad.

Re: Enigma genius Alan Turing papers saved for the nation
Excellent news.
I had the good fortune to do some training in 1977/78 at Bletchley Park - you could sense the history about the place.

Re: Enigma genius Alan Turing papers saved for the nation
I'm just wondering what else this genius of a man would have gone on to achieve if he hadn't been driven to suicide.

MP calls for pardon for computer pioneer Alan Turing
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...ester-16833621
Quote:
Mr Leech's motion called for a recognition of the "vital contribution made by Alan Turing to Britain's war effort" and "regrets that following his years of national service he received a criminal conviction for having a sexual relationship with another man".
The MP said Turing was "a Manchester hero and a national hero" and people should sign the e-petition calling for Turing's pardon.

The petition is here...

Re: Enigma genius Alan Turing papers saved for the nation
Excellent!
But what happened to the last petition?
Quote:
Gordon Brown has said he is sorry for the "appalling" way World War II code-breaker Alan Turing was treated for being gay.
A petition on the No 10 website had called for a posthumous government apology to the computer pioneer.

Re: Enigma genius Alan Turing papers saved for the nation
Signed as this man was a brilliant scientist and his sexuality should not have been an issue.
