However, manuals do contain some disturbing admissions in their fine print. The user guide to the BlackBerry Torch advises using its "approved holster with an integrated belt clip or maintain a distance" of 25mm between the "BlackBerry device and your body while the BlackBerry device is transmitting".

And the Apple iPhone 4 guide says: "iPhone's SAR measurement may exceed [US] . . . exposure guidelines for body-worn operation if positioned less than 15mm from the body (eg, when carrying iPhone in your pocket)."

Australian Centre for RF Bioeffects Research executive director, University of Wollongong Professor Rodney Croft, said: "Even if it is over the limit there is no evidence . . . that it would cause harm unless it was at least 50 times the limit.

Re: Is your smartphone making you sick?
Currently SAR (Specific absorbtion rate) is solely based upon the heating effect of the RF
Quote:
# United States: the FCC requires that phones sold have a SAR level at or below 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) taken over a volume containing a mass of 1 gram of tissue.
# European Union: CENELEC specify SAR limits within the EU, following IEC standards. For mobile phones, and other such hand-held devices, the SAR limit is 2 W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue (IEC 62209-1).

Wiki
The jury is still out on possible cancer causing effects of mobiles on 900MHz and 1.8GHz though there are cases where radiation from microwave ovens on 2.45GHz has been linked to eye cataracts.
I still err on the side of caution with my mobile and avoid prelonged use.
