Want a new tv - help!
I did post about a year ago, but of course I imagine specs have changed.
We are now going to buy a new tv (in time for Xmas). Where do we start?
My daughter bought a Samsung 40" LED HD about a year ago and it's a lovely tv, but too big.
We only have a small room so a 32-37 would be max I suppose.
HD or HD ready. LED, LCD, Plasma?
We know zilch.
Then you have the numbers - 1080 etc....????
It's way over our heads.
We have a Virgin V+HD box
£600 is the max we want to pay.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated :-)

Looks like a good one - thanks.
Is LED better though? (only 'cos my daughter says it is)

Re: Want a new tv - help!
Things to consider:
1080p is full HD resolution. If you want to get the max out of formats such as Blu-ray then you must get that, especially for a larger TV screen. But cable and Sky HD is only 1080i so if that is all you need you might save money.
LED or Plasma is less important. there is a lot of overlap at that resolution with plasma being prevalent for the largest screens. TBH LED is OK, but have a look at the viewing angles relative to your room.
Check the connectivity. These days 2 HDMI should be a minimum and ideally I'd be looking at 3 to connect a Set Top Box, Blu Ray and console.
An inbuilt freeview tuner is a great idea if you don't want to rely on services such as Virgin Media or Sky.
Finally find the model you like and then google for reviews of it. You'll get a better picture of what is what.

Re: Want a new tv - help!
Just to add you can now get TV's with in built FreeviewHD so that may be worth looking for as well in the specs.

Re: Want a new tv - help!
I know you have a max price point of £600 but for an extra £49 you could have FreeviewHD built in, so you may want to consider the benefits of this.

edit
If you're going to be spending that amount of money on a TV you need to get 1 with good refresh rate to make the picture smoother so you would be looking for 100hz+.
How about this 1 for £600? which Amazon and Argos and play.com are selling.

Some things to consider:
1080P
100hz+
FreeviewHD will be a benefit eventually
Internet streaming connectivity and possibly Wifi ready with optional adaptor.
Don't rush into it and do your research.

If i was buying a TV i would go for:
LCD LED backlight.
1080P resolution.
FreeviewHD tuner(it will come in handy 1 day).
Some form on internet connectivity for streaming movies off the computer or other device.
100hz or better for smooth picture movements.
The above is just my opinion but for £600 you can get all that in your next TV.

Re: Want a new tv - help!
:-) Your opinion is most welcome SnoopZ.
I was only going to bother with a mini connector/HDMI from my MacBook to the tv.
I have tried using Orb through the Wii and that was rubbish.

Re: Want a new tv - help!
Going to look at tv's on Monday - thinking of an LG.
I think that the tv's don't come with cables?
Do I need to spend a lot on an hdmi cable (ie gold plated?)
Also will I need hdmi for the Wii and dvd (normal) player.
We haven't got any BluRay dvd's yet.
I have heard that a PS3 is the best way to go or would that be a waste if we're not great gamers?
Thanks again

One thing to consider is that the advantages of (proper) HD only become apparent on larger sets, and even then you have to sit pretty close to the set to notice the difference. Personally, I find my HD ready set more than adequate, and a marked improvement over my old CRT set.

Re: Want a new tv - help!
I'd strongly recommend a Sony Bravia. I recently got the 37kdl503 with built in freeview HD. The picture is stunning (and i'm very fussy). It's now about £100 cheaper than when i got it at around £560 (which includes a refund from Sony) from Richer sounds. RS will also price beat if you can find cheaper online, even for a week after you've bought it.

Re: Want a new tv - help!
Panasonic led 37" with fview HD, freesat HD, 1080p, 100hz, 2 USB - 1 of which is for hdd recording. Wireless Internet and dlna certified also. Better housed speakers than the others for better sound, finish is sweet - dark silver colour. Pedestal leans back for better viewing angle and is rock solid as it's all metal and heavier than the tv. Ease of use and the usual exceptional pana build quality. £649 @ comet.
Model is the Tx-L37D28BS.

Oh and if you want a wee bit cheaper the s20 37 inch panasonic will give u fview HD and 1080p but is LCD. The g20 will give u the same spec as the afore mentioned led but in LCD.
C580 samsung in a 32 would be ok and well within budget or for 50 quid extra u could get the ex403 Sony. Best deal at the mo is the rv753 tosh in the 32" @ £349
all 1080p with fview HD.
Happy shopping!
