Nokia to give Ovi Maps away for free..

Nokia are planning to give away Ovi Maps (including directions and text to speech facility) for free.

Previously, the mapping part was free, but the user paid a subscription for the directions, and various other services.

I had them already on my N95. I've just updated the UK map but not sure if they're any newer than the one I had already?

I have just downloaded the latest version and it has different layout to the old version and 2 extra buttons Lonely Planet and Michelin.

well its only compatible with newer phones
also if ur phone is using operator variant firmware (orange,vodafone)
the firmware might not be updated to use it

i have a N97 and its not yet available till next week
and then my firmware might not be compatible

Only the N97 mini according to the link above.

in the Nokia forums a moderator says:

"Maps 3.03 for the N97 is going to be available from the 28th Jan 2010 via the IAD (also known as Software Update).

Users of the N97 are advised to update their firmware after release, which will then make the Ovi Maps 3.03 application available for download."

Thats good news as you might as well download it as you never know when you might need it.

for those with a Nokia N95 or other phones have a looksie for Sygic...I've got that now on my SE Satio and its excellent and "free" if you know where to look

I've already got that one. it's not too bad but I prefer Tomtom mostly. I use a seperate Tomtom anyway so I don't really need one on the phone.

Updated my 5800 Orange phone with software from Nokia, installed maps, works great.
