Scientists believe the strangest things

Another quack story gets printed in the daily mail.
Quote:
Scientists believe 'heavy water' enriched with a rare form of hydrogen could add as much as ten years to life.
So an extremely expensive rarity essential for various nuclear reactors and which has been shown to be toxic and cause sterility in high enough quanitities has expanded the lifetime of worms. And therefore is the elixer of life.

You can already see in the comments people asking where to buy heavy water.

If I become a scientist I will consider this libellous.

Re: Scientists believe the strangest things

There's an article on it in this week's New Scientist. A quick skim suggests that some people are skeptical, while others are intrigued. But, It isn't dismissed offhand.

Re: Scientists believe the strangest things

Hmm. While the experiments seem reasonable, the conclusions are what are generally described as 'wild'.

I'm not dimissing it off-hand, it is interesting, but its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too earlier, at this stage infering these conclusions are ludicrous and dangerous especially since it directly contradicts other findings.

And as for the claim "scientists believe" well I would be surprised if you could find 10 who do.

If one wants to go down that route, at least go down the route of Aubrey de Grey's ideas for areas of research!

Re: Scientists believe the strangest things

I'll try and keep my ranting to this thread.

The sunday times fabricates an attack on google

Scientist issues clarfication

Telegraph fabricated research on climate change, cite scientist. Ignores letters and deletes comments trying to get it corrected.

we all need salt to live, but too much will kill us. we all need water to live, but too much will kill us. why should we dismiss the idea that just enough of this will actually do us good in some way?
