Take cover Andromeda's coming.
Well not just yet anyway, but our own galaxy the Milky Way and our nearest galactic neighbour Andromeda are currently on a collision course speeding towards each other at 120 kilometers a second.
Admittedly this will not happen for another 2 billion years, but it will happen. Will humanity still be around? if so they will hopefully have found a new home by then, if not its curtains.
PS Beam me up Scotty!

Re: Take cover Andromeda's coming.
We'll probably have collided with Vega long before then.

So disappointed - I thought it was a porn movie starring Lexa Doig (Rommie)

Re: Take cover Andromeda's coming.
And there was me worrying about the Sun engulfing the earth in 5 Billion years. This is a much more pressing matter
Edit: Must type all words in future

Re: Take cover Andromeda's coming.
So nobody's heard of our 1 in 450 chance of annihilation in 2036 by a 200 billion tonne asteroid then.

Gives you confidence in NASA stories like this. When you take into account the "dinosaur" asteroid 65 million years ago, and god knows how many more have hit since, it seems very unlikely the human race will make it to the Andromeda event. Look at the Moon or Mars and see how many impacts they have, which can be clearly seen due to little or no atmosphere and no weathering, it makes you realise our luck will not hold out forever. What we really need is SG1 on hand, and maybe the Asgard.

Re: Take cover Andromeda's coming.
If you think about it logically, even if the asteroid hit the ISS in 2029, is a 200 billion tonne body going to be significantly deflected by a sub 500 tonne object?

I thought that, but I suppose that if it did hit the ISS it would be well, well close already to the atmosphere, so even if it upset its trajectory by a minuscule amount by the time it comes around again it might well hit us.

Re: Take cover Andromeda's coming.
They say there is quite a few astronomical events that could wipe out life on Earth. It's up to us if we believe them or not.
If your worried about big celestial bodies hitting us - fear this monster if it ever came our way its in this galaxy:-
