Re: Which is the best 37' inch hdtv to purchase?

the thing with the cheaper brand TVs is that they are cheap because they use old panels and old processing components (up to a good 4 to 5 years old - the stuff that the named brands used that amount of time ago but have since binned) - thus they are cheap. named brands such as panasonic, pioneer (often regarded as the best in flat panel TVs at this time), sony (though you'll pay more for that name) and the such are MUCH better as they actually supply the latest technologies in their TVs. you really do get what you pay for. buy the tele cheap, expect poor picture / audio / build and outdated components. you really are better off saving for a bit longer and getting something named. the prices are dropping all the time, so hold out and save some money. for a descent 37", I would not pay less than around £800 to £900.

I've got that one - except it has an A at the end of the model number, no idea what the difference is

Re: Which is the best 37' inch hdtv to purchase?

Hi Guys, I thought I'd use this thread rather than start a new one.

Mrs has put her foot down and we can't get anything bigger than a 37" HDTV. My requirements are:

Budget ~800
Good for SD tv
Good for HD content (from V+)
Good for BR from PS3
Most important, Decent pic for watching sport.

Can this be done?

Re: Which is the best 37' inch hdtv to purchase?

a lot of that depends on the quailty of the program ur watching - sport is especially bad..
u sure u cant spend more? for the 800 quid id suggest looking at some older sony models that now go for a lot cheaper.
but i think if ur spending 800 quid with little HD content you may be better off saving a bit more 1000-1200 and getting somthing very flash

Samsung LE37M87BD (or M86BD)

37" Full HD 1080p LCD.

Can be found for under £800.

Actually, the LE40M8 can be found for under £800 too...

Or the Toshiba 37X3030

37", Full HD 1080p.

Under £800.

Both meant to be excellent, although I've read that the Tosh has better sound.

Or... the Toshiba 37Z3030D... 37", Full HD 1080p, 100Hz, 24fps... dunno about the price though.

Have a search around http://www.avforums.com/

Re: Which is the best 37' inch hdtv to purchase?

Cheers,

I could prob stretch to 1k, but I really can't go above 37" or the missus will go back to her " we don't need anything bigger than 32" " talk again.

I was thinking of the sammy, but heard some good some bad about it. It's important to me that footy doesn't blur too much.

I'll look into the tosh and see if I can find a display model showing something half decent.

I do sit on AVforums, but I tend to be blinded by science, with all the stats and settings.

Cheers again.

IIRC, the only real bad point I read about the 37" Samsung was the sound was a bit weak.

Both that & the Toshiba 37X3030 have had great reviews.

Also, a quick Kelkoo has found prices for the apparently uber-awesome Toshiba 37Z3030D (Z range is the next up from the X range)

http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/sbs/.../18379214.html

http://www.1staudiovisual.co.uk/cata...ec&ref=208

From £799!

Full HD 1080p (like the Sammy & the Tosh 37X3030), 100Hz, and the ever important 24fps (so no more juddery Blu-ray Discs, as the PS3 can output 1080p24 for BDs).

Actually, I think the Sammy LE37M8 can do 24fps too, which may be worth a check.

---------------------
EDIT - A bit of Googling does seem to suggest that the M8 range can do 24fps

Seems firmware dependent, although apparently UK sets do have the correct firmware for it.

There's also the newer Sammy range, the F8 range, which are 100Hz & do 24fps.

I've got a smaller & older Sammy R7, just over a year old. Lovely TV. If I had the space (& the money, lol), I'd happily buy a nice big Samsung TV.

Re: Which is the best 37' inch hdtv to purchase?

Cheers guys once again.

We'll be sitting about 8-9ft away from the TV.

I have a friend who has the 37"M86, but doesn't watch sport so hard to know if that would be any good. Though he does say he's ultra happy with it.

I'll do some reading up on the Tosh, I really like the look of the Sammy, so it's nice to hear good things about it.

You can't get better!
Watch the 'leccy bills though. Plasma uses twice what CRT does for the same screen size, and four times more than LCD.

Blurring and juddering on all but the slowest of movement on screen, picture is so soft with SD pictures from Virgin (they don't have HD so can't comment on that) and as for the black levels forget it, it doesn't get anywhere near black.

Makes the picture on my 7 year old CRT look blummin' fantastic!

But hey, they seem happy with it, but I know I wouldn't be.
You sure it's not just a case of "we paid x hundreds of pounds for this, it's awful, but we will like it anyway"?

Anyway, that case just underlines what I always say. Go and look at a few TVs. Preferably in a proper home cinema/hifi dealer (although most of those wouldn't touch non-brand TVs). Having said that even one in a department store, or supermarket would give you a better idea of what the picturers like than a photo on a website.
