re: The iPhone thread

Another O2 quirk, friend of mine is on O2, asked them about a upgrade to the iPhone 3G and was told that since it has been so long since he last upgraded that he would have to apply for a new contract with new phone number rather than upgrade.

For example, the new top-of-the-range 32GB model costs the same as the old top-end 16GB handset did, and the new 16GB version costs the same as the old 8GB version did.

In the UK, however, O2 has gone for higher launch prices. While the old 16GB handset was introduced at £159 on the lowest monthly tariff, the new 32GB model costs £274.23 (a 72 percent increase). The new 16GB handset costs £184.98 on that tariff, compared with the old 8GB model's £99 (an 87 percent increase).

One explanation for the higher new prices could be the strengthening of the dollar — Apple is US-based — against the pound since last year's launch, but that would only account for an increase of around 25 percent. A spokeswoman for O2 told ZDNet UK on Tuesday that iPhones are now "less subsidised [by O2] than they were before". O2 did not respond to a request for further comment.

re: The iPhone thread

You have to be careful how you compare prices. All iPhone contracts in the US are 24 month, so you have to ignore the 18 month ones.

If you compare the 24 month 3GS 16gb price to the equivalent US one its actually cheaper (£87.11 = $147 versus $199)

Still plenty to moan about. I hate how we now have so many 18 and 24 month contracts about. Its silly I think to be tied to a phone that long. They change so quick.

I want a new iPhone for 18 months (could manage that I guess), but £187 is really steep.

The iPhone costs are a bit ridiculous when you think that iPod Touches are a fraction of the price and only lack a GSM chip.

Yeah

I thought 18 month contracts were bad enough, but 24 month contracts are ridiculous.

Upgraded to 3.0 last night.

It's honestly like having a new phone! So many new features and little changes. I love it.

re: The iPhone thread

I don't like the fact you have to pay for Tethering... When you have unlimited data on the Pay Monthly Tariffs already? How do they distinguish between raw data and tethered data?

Not that it matters to me anyway as I'm only on a 2G iPhone...

Especially when its cheaper to get a dongle from O2 and use that instead of your iPhone.

Apparently using the internet on a laptop uses more data than the iPhone does so thats why they charge so much

Think that is on the FAQ page on o2's site.

I did think about this when I had my n95. My tariff did have a 3 gig limit, and I thought of tethering my computer but I realised that while I'd be hard pressed to use a 3 gig monthly limit on a phone, on a computer, I could use it easily (think about it, even game demos can be up to a gig now)..

re: The iPhone thread

"shake to shuffle" - shake the ipod touch to shuffle to a new song in the music library.

I can predict that one will be popular with people who wear the iphone / ipod touch while jogging...
