XD backup whilst on holiday?
Hello,
Does anybody have on of those gadgets that allow you to back memory cards whist on holiday?
You know the sort - you shove the card in, it copies the contents to internal media (probably HDD) which allows you to zap the card for re-use...
Cheers
Lee

Re: XD backup whilst on holiday?
It's probably just as cheap to buy extra memory cards than have a gadjet just to copy stuff over to.
On the other hand if you want to see your photos and stuff, then I've found the Archos Gmini products good, if you have the money. Most of these will do as an mp3 player, video player (you can download DVDs and stuff) and if in the right non copy protected format you can even link to a TV and playback, and you can do the same with photos to show off to a larger audience.
But as with any device, if photos are that critical, do you only want one copy on your memory card, or the hard disk of your backup device. Surely you need memory card and backup?

There's a few here:

They're not cheap mind. You could always take a lappy and a card reader or, as Rob suggests, spare cards will probably be your cheapest solution. And you could keep the 'exposed' ones on your body somewhere in case your camera gets nicked.

Re: XD backup whilst on holiday?
Gotta go with Rob's suggestion and buy extra XD cards, as there around a tenner per GB its a far cheaper option that alot of storage devices, unless you take a lappy with you and buy a card reader for around 15-20

CD burner from Intro2020 (distributor for Pentax, Cokin, Metz and many others):
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220126386705
£70 plus dely but no xD slot. You'd need a CF to xD converter too!
Edit:
NOTE TO CLICKERS: I DID NOT PUT IN A LINK TO AUCTION-ADS. INSTEAD, I INSERTED A STRAIGHT LINK TO THE ITEM ON EBAY. THIS HAS BEEN MODIFIED AUTOMATICALLY BY VBULLETIN AND I CANNOT GET RID OF IT! IMHO AUCTION-ADS CAN JUST **** OFF!
Edit Again:
RIGHT! I HAVE MANAGED TO DEFEAT THE AUCTION-ADS CODE BY USING TINYURL INSTEAD.
I CAN'T REMEMBER EVER TYPING IN CAPS BEFORE BUT THIS MAKES ME REALLY ANGRY. ADVERTS I CAN TOLLERATE 'COS I CAN CHOOSE TO IGNORE THEM BUT ****ING ABOUT WITH WHAT I CARE TO WRITE TAKES THE BISCUIT. NOTE TO MODS: PLEASE STOP IT - NOW!

Re: XD backup whilst on holiday?
Okay - I've calmed down a bit now.
I originally posted a link to the item concerned thus:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=220126386705
However, if you hover over the link and you will see that it actually takes you to the auction-ads site. I didn't do that. The Vbulletin software has been modified to look for eBay links and change them.
As it happens, my router (and all those I look after) are all configured to block any access to auctionads.com. Consequently, when I clicked on my link to check it was working, after I had made my post, all I saw was my router's nah-nah message.
What I object to is this board publishing something in my name that I did not write. I'm sure there's a word for it. Whatever it is, I don't like it.

Re: XD backup whilst on holiday?
You could buy 7 x 1gb XD cards for the price of this item, 7x1gb @ 5mp = 2800 pics @ fine quality and 5000@ 5mp normal quality, easily far more than all but the most ardent photographer would take while on their jollies

Just make sure you buy them before you go on holiday. I had a very strange conversation with a shopping assistant whilst attempting to buy an "SD" card on holiday.
When she started talking about "Iced Tea" it dawned on me that our wires had got crossed....
