Happy birthday, Cash Machine.
Today (25 June 2007) is the 40th anniversery of the first Cash Machine going online.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6230194.stm
The machine, which operated using the same basic principles of today's machines (ie, you stuck in a cheque, entered a 4 digit PIN then took your money) was limited to £10 a transaction. The inventor apparently had the idea in his bath, and envisaged a machine that worked similarly to a chocolate dispenser, but with cash, and, to this end, the first cash machine deposited the money in a drawer with you then pulled out.
Interestingly, when he came up with idea of the PIN number, he suggested using a six digit number, but settled on 4 digits after his wife pointed out that she (and other people) may have trouble remembering the extra two digits.
The machine was installed in a Barclays branch in Enfield, where a small plaque was hung on the cash machine's 25th anniversary.
Now, I didn't mean this to turn into a rant, but this guy invented something that changed the way that a large percentage of the human race (well, those that use banks anyway) live. How many of you actually go into your bank or building society regularly now? I suspect most of you do most of your banking online, or through a cash machine, and go to the cash machine to get cash.
Surely we should be doing a little more to celebrate this than sticking up a plaque?

Pointless semi-interesting fact of the day: Reg Varney was the first official ATM user.

Apparently the first ATM was installed in NY in 1939 but was ditched after 6 months because noone used it.

I can't remember the last time I used an ATM. Use Switch for most things these days.

I never knew that was his name... for some reason I was mistaking the name with a car dealership place called Reg Vardy (one of my neighbours has the sticker in his car) and thought it was a bit strange that the owner of that would be the 1st person.
The bloke from On the Buses makes much more sense. Didn't realise he was still alive, tbh.

Re: Happy birthday, Cash Machine.
My favourite useless fact about the world's first ATM is that you needed a 'mildly radioactive' chequebook in order to make it work.

How do you pay money in then, cos i didnt know that. Another pointless and interesting fact is that you can even top up your phone at some ATM Machines now as well.

At the Abbey, you type in the amount you want to pay in, take an envelope from a dispenser (when the machine tells you - the dispenser is locked before that), stick the money in the envelope, then feed it into a slot as directed by the screen (you have to stick it in a certain way, as the machine prints on it.
Later on, someone opens the envelope, checks the amount in it, and if it matches what is on it, clears the payment.

In the Nationwide they have machines which can read the normal savings books & can read cheques & count cash paid in (although not the new £20's yet)
