The world's most expensive WiFi Access point?

Well, it isn't WiFi, but US Defence contractors have found a novel use for the radar arrays aboard the F-22 superjet. A high bandwidth wireless access point.

The AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radars are made from multiiple transmit-recieve elements, and have been designed to multi task.

Up till now, apart from the obvious functions of Radar, they've been able to use the system as electronic warfare scanners, jammers or electromagnetic weapons for frying enemy circuitry.

Ground trials of the system have suggested that it could potentially carry 548 Mbit of data a second. In the air, the system maxed out at around 274 Mbit/sec. It would be interesting to find out if it managed that in battle though (where it will likely have to contend with many signals from both sides). Of course, we aren't likely to find that out..

The current systems apparently carry data at 1Mbit/sec.

This is fine for position reporting, but modern planes (especially robot planes) need to transfer much more data.

Makes you worry about how they might enforce traffic shaping

snipped only for length....

it is also another step towards a pilot-less airplane with a lot more capability than the current ones

No. The main problem is that the next generation robot planes can be remote controlled. Thus, the plane needs to be able to transmite a video image, radar image and various signals from other systems (comms, warning alarms etc). It also needs to have the bandwidth to receive control signals, radar and various other source.

All of which means that they need rather a lot of bandwidth. AFAIK, the only way to do that now is for them to use satellites which have two problems: They are expensive, and make a nice fixed target for the enemy. While I don't know if any countries have the capability to launch missiles into space, they will at some point.

This system allows them to use the F-22s which can defend themselves, are a moving target (harder to hit) and cheaper than launching satellites, or using AWACS to do the same thing.

Re: The world's most expensive WiFi Access point?

Presumably they've now sorted out all of the F22's laughably poor software seeing as they're now messing around with broadband.
