Failed Nokia N80 Update
I'm sure I've seen a post on this before but can't find it now.........apologies if its a duplicate.
So - seems like I've broken my N80 ! I tried to update the firmware using the Nokia Software Updater but halfway through the update my PC crashed and rebooted !
So, I have a small door stop now and no phone ! I did do a backup first, but I can't restore that as the phone is dead (i.e. won't switch on and won't get recognised by the PC).
I have insurance I think and its only about 6 months old (still in warranty) - any ideas ? Whats the best thing, claim on Ins or take to Nokia repair center ?
Damn phones

Re: Failed Nokia N80 Update
well if it was a pc id say buying a new board would be cheaper than changing the eprom as that chip to all intense and purposes is dead. Id drop it and claim myself. Phone up and ask as joe public and decide on what they say. If its an easy fix let them do it if not ...

He was using the updater provided so maybe they would cover it, bit of a grey area though, as suggested, lose or drop it, accidentally of course

Re: Failed Nokia N80 Update
but the pc crashed it wasnt the software. Depends on how good the blag is I would imagine theres a warning with the software saying its at users own risk though

Re: Failed Nokia N80 Update
But would losing it be covered in the insurance ? Need to log into the site today to see if its on my bill (I'm sure I did have it).
If so - are the any exemptions I need to be careful of ?

Not sure mate, I know my insurance on the XDA covers accidental damage ( dropping down toilets is definitely covered, long story ) and loss and or theft

Re: Failed Nokia N80 Update
I thought you weren't allowed to flash them yourself.
I'd send it to the Nokia Freepost address, and tick the box on the form for a firmware update, they won't even question it and if it's broke they'll fix it
Don't tell them you broke it doing that, just write a small note saying it has stopped working. They'll format it and update it.
I just sent my phone to them and they updated the firmware, replaced a cracked casing and fixed the screen problems i sent it in for. I sent it Special on the Tuesday and had it back by Saturday i think.
The link for the returns form isn't working on the Nokia site, but the address is
CRC Group
Freepost RLUU-EESY-AJAL,
Unit 73, Northgate,
RAF Alconbury
Huntingdon
Cambs
PE28 4WX
Just include your IMEI number, product code, name, address and alternative phone number with a brief description or request firmware update.
Don't foget to keep a copy of all that info for yourself.
The contact number is 01480 482897.
Hope you get it sorted

Another thing, don't even worry about them questioning you, they can see from the handset when it was made and it won't be more than a year old. I was thinking they might ask me for proof of purchase but they never. Good job cos i bought it on ebay

Oooh and don't forget to take the memory card and sim card out

Re: Failed Nokia N80 Update
but what that does not say is if the update crashes due to the pc. Updating firmware wouldnt void a warrenty screwing it up by crashing an update would be user responsability

Re: Failed Nokia N80 Update
I worked as a service agent a while back on behalf of Nokia and can confirm all you need to do it take it to a service centre with your proof of purchase and you will get a repair or replacement free of charge!
