Any recommendations for a Cheapish DVD-r with a hard drive which will basically play anything thrown at it.
Many thanks

Re: DVD-R / Hard drive Recommendations please
Look for the Lite-on range - LVW-5045 is I think DVDR + 160Gb disk. They play/record DVD +/-R, +/-RW, CDR/RW and prob DL. About the only thing they can't do is DVD-RAM.

Re: DVD-R / Hard drive Recommendations please
Go for the Sony RDR-HX725 which has a 160GB HDD, there is the 80GB version RDR-HX525.
both have a system called guide + which when set up allows the unit to control the NTL STB.
Yes the RDR-HX725 does cost around £450 but I have never had any problems with it or other Sony products.
the RDR-HX525 is around £400.

One thing you can do to help is go to the manufacturers website and down load the user guide for the players you are interested in.
Then make notes on what they can an can't do

Re: DVD-R / Hard drive Recommendations please
If I get one where you can programme weeks / monthly is advance (thinks it's called EPG) what mode does the unit have to be in. Ie Can it switched on or off and watched or does it have to be in timer mode all the time ????
Thanks
Mike

I`ve just bought this one, http://www.digital-point.co.uk/model-2604.html
It seems to play all formats and also has Timeshift where you can pause live TV.

I've got a LG7500, and am very happy with it.
It's got timeslip, and can use these formats - it's only got an 80gb HD, but that's enough for me.
