The ultimate translator?
DARPA are working on the world's most advanced translation system. Called GALE, which stands for Global Autonomous Language Exploitation (Don'tcha just love acronyms), the system enables realtime translation of text and speech (including Radio and TV) in realtime and between many languages. Similar to Babelfish, but with speech recognition added.
Now, assuming they can get the accuracy up to a reasonable level, it could be good.

Re: The ultimate translator?
I'm just amazed by the technology. Actually, I wasn't knocking Babelfish (excellent site), and the articles I read (the one I linked to and one on /. ) didn't mention when or if it would be publically available, or how much it would cost.

Re: The ultimate translator?
They most likely are developing it for military purposes initially, since DARPA is the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency. It's most likely going to interface with existing comms monitoring systems for the SIGINT (SIGnals INTelligence) divisions of the existing military services.
Mere mortals would most likely have to wait some years before the system would be available.

Re: The ultimate translator?
To be fair, it is still at an early stage.
"The electrodes on the face of this graduate student pick up electrical impulses from the muscles flexed while mouthing words. The impulses are then transliterated into language (in this case, English) and can then be translated into foreign languages."
Re Sigint - GCHQ and NSA aren't military
Here is a list of the programmes DARPA are working on at the moment - Z-Man sounds quite cool!
http://www.darpa.mil/dso/programs.htm
"The Z-Man Program will develop climbing aids that will enable an individual soldier to scale vertical walls constructed of typical building materials without the need for ropes or ladders. The inspiration for these climbing aids is the technique by which geckos, spiders, and small animals scale vertical surfaces, that is, by using unique biological material systems that enable controllable adhesion using van der Waals forces or by hooking surface asperities. This program seeks to build synthetic versions of those material systems and then utilize them in a novel climbing aid optimized for use by humans. The overall goal of the program is to enable an individual soldier using dry adhesive climbing aides to scale a vertical surface at 0.5 m/s while carrying a combat load."
