Domain Names
Hi, Excuse me if this sounds like a stuppid question, but I'm a novice to this stuff.
I have created a club website in my NTL webspace & now want to register a proper .co.uk or .com domain name so people in the club will remember it.
What is the procedure here and what is reputable site to register at a reasonable cost. How do I get the new domain name to point to my NTL server.
Is there any drawbacks in keeping the site on NTL servers ? I've heard that you will always see the ntl address after tye initail re-direction. Should I consider paying to host the site.
Any help much appreciated.

Hi gmcl - welcome to the forum.
- up to you but I would definitely look at paying to have your site hosted.
- ntl webspace doesn't support server side scripting or linking to databases that a hosted domain should.
- imo you could do worse than check out the special deal from the hosts of this site, there is a link at the bottom of the 'front page' of the forum.

Re: Domain Names
I'd have to side with Gaz on this one, hosting costs next to nothing these days and you can get a very good deal from i-web. If you want to attract lots of visitors and have people come back to your site again and again you need to offer some kind of interactivity like a forum. Which you will not be able to host on your NTL space.

Re: Domain Names
There is a way to mask the ntl domain name through forwarding so nobody would ever see it. Although if it loads pictures etc, on the bottom of the browser you'll maybe see the ntlworld domain as it loads piccies or parts of the site, but not in the address bar at the top.
I've always found www.easily.co.uk brilliant but they are one of the more expensive ones at £10 for 2 years for a .co.uk. Another one is www.123reg.co.uk which are abit cheaper I think and I've never had a problem with them. Think they are about £7.50 or something. You can set up forwarding on these domains to your ntl webspace and mask them. I'm sure poeple will know other domain name sellers that are cheaper.
If at some point in the future you wanted to buy your own webspace, from i-websolutions for example all you do is fiddle about with your domain name control panel settings and it changes the domain to use the webspace at i-web solutions. You don't need to rush out and do it all at once though, you aren't doing anything abortive should you just buy a .co.uk domain now and worry about hosting later on should you want to move away from ntl webspace.

good point about the forum - I suddenly thought, though, iirc i-web are doing their ip move tonight, so it may not be a good time to judge them, just now

Re: Domain Names
can I side track this thread or at least broaden it. I already have a domain name
but the place where the site is hosted is having a lot of problems right now. I have been looking at iweb as well and the deals look good, the question is how do I transfer my domain name from one host to another (sorry if that's a dumb question)
also I know nthell has been down once or twice recently and is hosted on iweb, so whats the uptime really like, is it 99.5% like they claim?

Re: Domain Names
i-web has been down for a few days over the past couple of weeks. Its been because of major changes, moving server farms etc, its not indicative of their operation I wouldn't think. These moves are things that happen once in a blue moon, not every few weeks. I've been with i-web for a couple of weeks now and so far its been good, its much faster than my other webhost eukhosting.com. The last two weeks haven't been the best time to judge i-web though because of their re-structuring. The i-web servers are located in the US though afaik, think there may be some in Germany but not sure.
With regards to moving to another webhost, it depends what arrangement you have. Did you get the domain name free with your webhost or something or is it with a seperate domain selling company ?

Re: Domain Names
I'll add to the already large number of people recommending a registration of domain at http://www.123-reg.co.uk and hosting at http://www.i-websolutions.co.uk both of which I use myself.
As said above, the main drawback of NTL space is the total lack of scripting support. (Mine is used purely as image hosting, which is still pretty twitchy)
I'm sure everyone who has replied thus far will be happy to help if you come back.. me included. Heres to a happy hosting experience

Re: Domain Names
I'll throw UKREG into the mix, used them for a year or so, have registered hundreds of domains for customers and never had a problem.

Re: Domain Names
I Use UKREG and www.fasthosts.co.uk and have to say they have been perfect.
Out of loyalty to kindred spirits I would consider a move to www.i-websolutions.co.uk.
There have been some troubles recently but we are all human after all.
Take a long term view :-)

Re: Domain Names & Web Hosts in UK
Hi guys
thanks for all the suggestions for a suitable uk webhost.
Ended up going with www.i-websolutions.co.uk & have not been disappointed.
Got responses back to my enquires within the hour & was fully up & running inside 48 hours. Not bad going when you think that I started the process at 18.30 on a Sunday evening.
thanks again.
