Not an immediate answer, and definitely low tech, but if you read one of the broadsheets, they normally have a 'Sky at Night' feature with an associated sky chart at regular intervals.

And now a little logic. Mars' orbit is outside that of the Earth. At the moment it is about as close as it gets to the Earth. This means that Sun, Earth and Mars are, very roughly, in a straight line. So, I'd suggest looking somwhere vaguely easterly not too long after sunset. At the moment Mars is very bright, so it should be easily seen.

EDIT And another foolproof logical argument disappears down the drain! Well, south is nearer east than west is. Try this.

Mars is fairly high in the south by the time darkness arrives. It is visible in the constellation of Pisces, the Fish. The waxing crescent Moon helps you to find the planet on the 27th [of January], when it lies just beneath the Red Planet.

It can usually be seen close to the moon, i.e the brightest star.
