Re: html newbie advice wanted
.Net magazine did a fantastic html for beginers booklet but that's not much help now.
Best bet is to search on the web as to how to do the things you want to do.
Oh and the best html writing program is notepad.

Re: html newbie advice wanted
one of the better resources for learning the basics: http://www.w3schools.com/
feel free to bug me if you want help with anything website wise.
the way I started off was to find sites that i liked and look at the code to see how they did it (right click menu -> view source)
and as xac said.. start in notepad, it will force you to do everything slowly at first.. but it will help you understand what you are doing and why

A good program to try is dreamweaver if you can get hold of a copy, it generally builds the web pages without putting in too much cr*p in.
You could also try frontpage if you want a good example of what not to do.
Speaking of which try web pages that suck

Newer versions of frontpage do not output the same garbage that frontpage 98 and below did. Not that I'd ever recommend using it, it's like ... word for HTML noobs.

Can't beat a good book Your nearest Waterstones or equivalent will probably be stacked to the gills with learn HTML books (plus in Waterstones you can sit and use their books without paying for them )
As an editor I'd reccomend gVim, it's like notepad on speed. It'll still make you do all the work but it colour codes the syntax to make it easier to understand.

Re: html newbie advice wanted
I found Elizabeth Castro's 'HTML for the World Wide Web' very useful but Mike McGrath's 'HTML 4 in easy steps' is crap.
There's loads of stuff on http://www.w3.org/.
Also, when you find a page you like, just select View / Source in your browser to see what they've done.

Re: html newbie advice wanted
Kronas, try EditPlus 2.11 for an editor, it's really good. I loathe Ultraedit, but you might like that. I wouldn't advise you to look at w3.org if you're a beginner, I struggle to understand it sometimes and I've been doing html for years. Reading w3.org is a bit like someone who isn't a lawyer trying to read and understand an act of parliament - you will struggle.
