It would be nice if NTL could set theirs up to be anonymous. Presumably they keep logs anyway so it could help customer security if theu used anon. proxies.

P.S. for anybody using mozilla or firebird, there's an extension that lets you mask the user agent string and give it whatever value you like so your browser and OS can't be extracted.

Thats fine - but....

If you dont pass the browser info to the website it will be unable to deliver the page to you correctly. Java and frames can cause problems if the server is not aware of your browser ver.

I really don't understand the paranoia that makes people alter their user agent.

BTW, I added another field (Client IP) to my page as some proxy servers use this instead.

It allows the user agent variable to be changed on the fly. Useful if you meet an IE only page, you can check to see if it works well enough without me having to switch OS.
I wouldn't have thought Java would be a problem if an applet is correctly written, do you mean Javascript?

It may be paranoia, but I have in the past have someone track me through a combination of user agent and IP ranges
