High phone bills...... dailers 09 numbers
Hi all
I recently read an article where people on BB (ntl) had high phone bills where dailers where connecting to the interent rather than using the BB connection and thus they incurred high bills.
These were normally dailers (from the internet) which the people concerned did not know where on their PC.
Does this happen alot !!! and how can one be protected ?
regards

It does happen quite a bit,
the easiest protection is, if you are on a cable internet connection, there is generally no need for you to have a dial up modem. Simply unplug the modem from the telephone socket then there is no way for these diallers to connect.

I curent have BB but may have an internal modem....the only connection I see is from my network card to modem and then modem to box on wall. I presume I am safe ?
Thanks

Re: High phone bills...... dailers 09 numbers
This dialler problem seems to be quite widespread and is being discussed on another ntl user forum familiar with many users here :p :p .
I got caught despite having Spybot, Adaware and Spywareblaster installed. Dunno how the damned thing installed itself, but it did. Fortunately in line with ICSTIS it cut off before the >£20 limit. There was no software installed associated with the dialler just an extra entry in my dial up connections settings ! I've unplugged the dial up modem just in case !
ICSTIS have fined the company concerned (a Spanish outfit) and requested they reimburse all victims, but to date I have recieved no reply from them !
Beware you may think you are protected..I did !!

These dialers use the tapi layer directly. The internet options have nothing to do with it, its only tcp/ip that is used for making the connection.
Spywareblaster should stop these dailers being installed in the first place. You can download it from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Get an external modem.
Dad dials into work when he's oncall, and forgot to disconnect just before he went away for a long weekend!
£160 phone bill, mum not happy, so now he's got an external modem which only gets turned on when he's using it.
