Throttle connection back
I want to throttle back my bandwidth on cable modem (600K) to emulate the speed of a dialup modem 56K (preferably from one PC) - I have 4 connected.

I've tried to download a version of Linux on one machine which obviously uses a lot of bandwidth but need to ensure that I've got a 56K or less connection to test a website with a database at the backend.

Anyideas? or should I rely on NTL to screw things up?

Are you using IIS ? There is an option to restrict a websites bandwidth within IIS but I don't know if it actually works.

No - My webserver is remote and is Linux/Apache and not wholly under my control (I-Web Solutions).

Ideally I need to amend my various systems side by side for testing I.e. one running at 50K and one at 128K and another at 600K

Well you could signup for a dailup service for one machine
get another BB connection @150 and use that on another
And use your existing 600 for another

I have heard of software that allow you to rate limit connections. What OS are you using?
