Wireless Network

Just brought a Netgear PC Card for my laptop (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=46056) and a Netgear Access Point (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=46057).

What do you all think on the above? Is it good? Price? Etc...?

Also, whats the range like for wireless networks?

And one more... is it safe? Will it be crackable?

Re: Wireless Network

No idea about prices

I take it you already have a non-wireless router?

We've got a server out in the garage, and the wireless router upstairs. Running 22Mbps though.

Will it be crackable? yes, if someone actually wants to bother (assuming you're running encryption) but are you likely to have neighbours try it?

Re: Wireless Network

Got exactly the same setup myself, WG511 card & WG602 access point, prices look good, easy to set up, I would suggest you set up access point thro' a wired connection first, then the pc card, just do it exactly as the manual says. Then you can think about adding security, MAC Authentication, then WEP. Range is good, should have no problems around the house. There is some good info on the netgear site btw.
Oh nearly forgot, just check with the netgear site you have the latest firmware, I didn't, but was a breeze to update.

Would that not come under MAC address authentication? Little point doing it by IP address, you may as well war chalk outside your front door yourself.

Re: Wireless Network

There are quite a few programs out there that can 'sniff' details out of your wireless network, may as well make it as hard as you can.

Oh, and watch out for people sat in cars with laptops outside your house your probably giving them free net access
