Virus Alert. "again"

Just had a deffiles update from Command, my AV suppliers.
This was part of the email.

NOTICE- This is an urgent def file release in order to protect
against the W32/Sober.C@mm virus. The virus is a mass-mailer
and appears to be spreading widely in Europe/UK/US/Canada.

Re: Virus Alert. "again"

It's not another variation on the "Hi, we're Microsoft, here's a patch, please install it" thing, is it?

All of a sudden I seem to be getting one or two of those a day.

Don't think there is a patch, you will need to check with your AV suppliers and update your deffiles.

More info here.

you should be checking for updates from your anti-virus vendor daily.. if you have already updated today then the likelyhood is you've got the new virus identities by now

(to those to whom it applies: if you've not got any anti-virus protection you're an idiot )

Not everyone needs it - some people do actually know not to open dodgy e-mails and have adequate firewalls in place.

thats a very dangerous attitude to have.. becuase you'll get an infection.. either via one of the methods you descride or via removable media.. etc
and you'll never know, because nothing will flag it up.

checking emails for dodgy attachments, (even if you open all your mail with html and scripting disabled)..by using your own judgement and prior experience is not a full proof method of filtering out viruses is it?.. come on

and a well configured firewall is useless if a trojan can make out-going connections via a trusted open port..

no matter how good you are with computers or IT in general I would always have anti-virus software installed..

I'm no beginner myself, yet I'm proud to say that I have anti-virus installed.. it isn't a signal to others that you lack in knowledge, rather it shows you understand what risks there are and want to minimise them

(pem, i'm not trying to prove you wrong for the sake of it, the important thing is that forum members who are not sure of themselves when it comes to this type of issue need to be fully aware of the threat viruses pose, so don't take this personally..
Just ask any IT professional the same question.. and you'll get the same answer.. any company or individual without a tried and tested anti-virus solution is asking for trouble)

Re: Virus Alert. "again"

I think you mis-understand slightly - I'm not advising people not to use AV - I'm disagreeing with your statement that everyone who does not use it is "stupid" - there can be many valid reasons not to have AV on a machine.

JFYI - I have it installed on all my home machines - but not all my work machines have it.

Re: Virus Alert. "again"

my apologies, the "idiot" comment was meant to be light-hearted.. but also to wake up the casual thread browser to the importance of the issue

One quick example - some of our machines are data processing machines - having AV scan files slows the software (and processing) to almost a stop - therefore it is not used on these machines.

Re: Virus Alert. "again"

Are those machines at a constant level of usage 24/7?

Surely you could just disable any active, memory resident checking.. and use a scheduled sweep overnight for example?
