Unable to send mail for 14 days
First post and a newbie, I've had a look around but couldn't find anything similar to my problem.
System - Windows XP home, OE 6, Macafee Virus scanner v7 and personal firewall plus.
I use BTBroadband to access the net as ntl BB not avail here, ntl is on penny a minute as prior to that I was on unlimited £15/month access.
Since the beginning of Dec, since the first e-mail problem noted on the server status page, I have been able to receive mail but unable to send to anyone outside of ntl, i.e. joe.bloggs@ ntlworld.com will send whereas joe.bloggs@ xyz.com won't.
I receive the following error after failure to send in OE -
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was joe.bloggs@ xyz.com'. Subject 'Test', Account: 'xxx', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relaying mail to xyz.com is not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
I have tried it to several different addresses always get the same error msg.
outgoing mail smtp.ntlworld.com using port 25
incoming mail pop.ntlworld.com using port 110
I have filled out the form for reporting to ntl everyday for the last 14 and apart from the automated reponse I have not received one response or acknowledgement from ntl, but reading things here that doesn't seem too unusual.
Any help would be appreciated as I have to go overseas shortly for 10 weeks and e-mail home is quite important.

Simple answer to this and one you may not like it find another e-mail provider like Lycos.co.uk. NTL are not going to be getting any better

Re: Unable to send mail for 14 days
Welcome to NTHW Spanners
Answer lies in your question.
I think you will find that smtp mail servers only work when you are connected directly to the network the server is on so you cant access the NTL smtp outgoing server via your BT connection. That said the incomming mail should work I think as same does not apply to pop servers.
Hope that helps at least identify the problem if not the solution.

Re: Unable to send mail for 14 days
hmm just set up a bt openworld account and that won't receive either different error though - There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'xxx', Server: 'mail.btopenworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Bad login', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
password is correct.
p.s. why did this move from mail problems to internet!

Re: Unable to send mail for 14 days
Because it was posted in the ntl section of the site, & it doesn't appear that your problem is ntl related.

yes, it sounds like you have two e-mail accounts, with BT & NTL and have the same smtp server set for both? Change the smtp settings for your BT account to point to the BT server, not NTL? Like Sociable says you should be able to set up the POP servers to, each, download from both accounts, though.

OK in that case maybe you need to double check the user name section as it may use the full email address rather than just the part before @xxxx.com for BT e-mail (I don;t use BT so cant help on that one but seem to recall that is the case)
Also make sure you have the correct setting in the "use secure log-in set" as it is not set for NTL mail but again I don't know what the appropriate setting is for BT for that aspect.

I would think it would be 'not' for both

Should be:
BT e-mail address
pop: bt's
smtp: bt's
ntl e-mail address
pop: ntl's
smtp: bt's
All will work fine then.

Re: Unable to send mail for 14 days
Firstly, thanks everyone for the replies, much appreciated.
Keyser, yes understand why you moved it, not a problem.
I'll try what you suggest later, as I'm at work at the moment, and will let you know if it is successful, fingers crossed!

Re: Unable to send mail for 14 days
ntl should allow sending of e-mails from off there network if you use authentication on smtp. I say should as pretty much everyone else does but then this is ntl your dealing with

Like who ?
I can think of no reason why they or any other ISP would want to do this.

Re: Unable to send mail for 14 days
I don't know an ISP that does that. I know of several companies where you pay for mail that allow you to do this.
