As SOSAGES states - port forwarding is better. Having the computer on a dmz does leave it open to atack.

I've managed to work out why I was getting slow speeds with BitTorrent: if the tracker is on port 80, NTL's transparant cache intercepts the HTTP request and connects to the tracker from the NTL proxy server.

When the tracker gets this request, it tries to open port 6881 on the proxy rather than on my PC, thus other BitTorrent users cannot connect back to my machine and I get a slow download.

Has anyone worked out how to get round this?

Apart from using Torrents with trackers on other ports, that is.

Sorted it now - SHAD0W'S BT client lets you set your IP address so that the tracker won't use the NTL proxy. Get it from here: http://www.shadow2k.org/downloads.php

Wonder why no-one has posted the answer to this before?? (on this forum or any other). People must have wondered why they weren't getting good speeds on BitTorrent/NTL before. Strange.

I use the Shadow Experimental Client to and usually get about 30-50kbps on a 600k NTL connection.I have opened ports 6881-6889.

Does 30-50kbps sound about right or can this be improved?

The fact you're getting d/ls in the 50K's would make me think there's nothing wrong with your setup - although on 600Kb service, i was getting (only on some things) speeds in the 60's - maybe its just the number of other clients you're connected to, or if its not a popular torrent ?

Try http://azureus.sourceforge.net with the latest Java 1.5beta JRE - much better than shaddow's.

Seems to have been. I put the values they guys told me, and hey presto! Decent speeds! All I have to worry about now is getting my blasted VPN connection to uni sorted! (groan!)

At a guess I would say that on whatever server you are getting it from they have blocked access to port 6881 on that server.

Ok thankyou. So in you're opinion it's down to the server and not a problem with my pc?

How can i change port settings so that it wont use 6881 or wont that work?

I doubt it's a problem with your pc, it's not the sort of message I would expect to see from local firewall software - and without knowing what p2p software you are using I could not tell you if you can change any port settings - but I would doubt it.
